Re: Lightning Sensor Placement?

Mine has performed adequately for detecting incoming storms hanging vertically indoors, from a hook up high on my living room wall.

I've been tinkering with an AS3935 sensor board as a side project, and its sensitivity and detection range seems to be direction-specific.  From looking at pictures of the innards of the Acu-Rite sensor, my $0.02 is to place it with the LED's facing the direction where the bulk of your t-storms come from.  In this area, LED's facing WNW is detecting storms with the sensor indoors before I can even hear the thunder outside.  (I bought the outdoor Acu-Rite lightning sensor from their replacement parts site and not part of a complete package, so I don't have the console to see the actual distance or strike count that it is reporting.)

Oh, and I actually did an outdoor test with an AS3935 stashed in that Acu-Rite solar radiation shield on Wednesday evening.  Being inside the shield did not appear to have any noticeable impact on detection sensitivity.....

The acurite rad shield is the best choice to house the sensor, or one that is larger. If you use the acurite, you can put a fan under it easily, and that keeps the temps from spiking and makes the sensor really accurate.

So did you paint your station? If you did could you share some picture?

Post #18. I don't have any pics. The station is no longer in service. I replaced it with another 5 in 1, and yes, it spikes a few degrees in midday.

The color is dark enough (grey) that it absorbs enough sun to raise the temp on the chip which is located inside the gray bottom of the 5 in 1 to cause a real mess for about 2 hours in the morning, and then 2 hours in the evening as the sun sets.

I am going to go with you on this one, i made a made shield, i bought white duct, it wasnt quite white but certainly white enough
yet, in the sun i was getting +2C, lots of experimenting later i found it to be the colour of the duct, i gloss white the duct and it
straight away brought it down to +1C , as you can see from the pre painted item that it was in fact white and prob about 50% glossy.
Certainly more glossy that a standard temp/hum shield for the wmr968

During an all cloudy day, with low wind, I am still seeing a 4 degree spike on my 5 n 1. Any ideas what I should paint to try and get the chimney effect going? Paint under the cover maybe, where the fan blades are? The stack of the wind cups and the cups themselves? I have no extra heating when the sun is out, like I do when it's cloudy. I can't figure where the heat comes from... Maybe the electronics?

You need a decent enough fan with 24hr power, even the davis spiked when the daytime fars shut down, my homemade
also spiked when the daytime fan shut down, i now have 12v fans in both running 24/7, no more spiking :)

This is their latest prediction: "The expected release for the Atlas is late summer/early fall." ... posted on the Acurite forum by Acurite Tori, Official Rep six days ago (May 30). Previous prediction was simply "summer 2017", so I assume this means they have pushed it back.

Maybe it will be available by November for the holiday shopping season?

FYI, using a RTL-SDR and rtl_433, from 06045 lightning sensor you get temperature in tenths of a degree fahrenheit, and lightning strike counts.  But there is a bit of software setup to make that useful to you.

I may not be able to wait it out... Patience is running thin.

I should clarify. My 5 in 1's patience may not make it much longer, so a replacement for it is bound to be just around the corner. I had my battery light come on again a couple of days ago after a month ago replacing them. I want to wait for the atlas, but if my sensor doesn't make it, I will not be able to hold out. I enjoy the thing too much. That's what I meant when I said "may not be able".

I’ve had my AcuRite 06045 lightning detector for a month now with somewhat mixed results.

The GOOD, it’s picking up strikes 20-23 miles away. The BAD, I get the interference not detecting message a couple times during each storm, and lightning counts seem very low when comparing to http://en.blitzortung.org/live_lightning_maps.php?map=34 . On my last storm the sensor counted only 3 strikes when it should have been over 30. Sometimes I hear the thunder rumble but get no count.

I currently have my sensor mounted in AcuRite’s solar shield on the north side of my shed 8 ft. off the ground and facing north (under the electrical wires). Most of my storms come from the west. So I’m going to start moving my sensor around trying different heights and different sensor directions. So it sounds like for my situation I should have the sensor facing west, 4-8 ft. off the ground?

Any other suggestion on how to improve the sensor performance?

My best results were observed after placing the lightning detector in AcuRite’s solar shield, then placing it on the roof, away from any electrical sources. I can verify my lightning detector stops at the 1000 strike mark. I reached that mark in less than 2 hours back in April.

The worst results were observed when the lightning detector was place inside my home.

Thanks, I'm going to try and move the sensor away from the electrical and phone wires for the next storm.

My first storm was intense and the sensor count was 359 strikes, but the last two only 6 & 3 on moderate storms but I know the counts should have been higher. That has me wondering why the low strike count and why I'm getting the interference message during storms. I have the sensor in the backyard 100 feet away from everything but the electrical and phone wires do run 20 feet above it. So that's the only thing I can think of that would effect the sensor.

Do you ever get the interference error message on your display during Storms. The only time I see it is during storms and it only last for 5 seconds before returning to Listening. I'll get the interference message maybe 5 times during a 20 minute storm. I'm wondering how common the interference message is. I've gotten them on every storm.

Yes, considerably at first, until I found the "right" spot for it. Such as an outside a/c compressor coming on will mess with it, if ot is to close to it.

Now I only notice it when the lightning just starts coming into range, or around the 23 to 25 mile mark. Once the lightning is measured within about 18 miles, not as much.

Thanks for the input. My AC is between the sensor and display but I don't recall it running at the time of interference. I'll keep looking for the right spot!

Does the Atlas have displays?  Or is it readable only with tablets, PCs and phones?

I'd like to upgrade but would need to have 2 (maybe 3) displays.

IIRC, the manufacturer of the sensor chip rates it for something under 25% detection rate at even the closer ranges.

As I posted in another thread, having the LED's facing east puts the antenna on the west side of the unit.....
