Re: Atlas/Access in a metal building

One thing that led me to buy a Davis was when some guys at work got a VP2. I helped them set it up.

Our building was steel frame construction with concrete filled metal floor pans (standard stuff).

I was very skeptical since the plan was to place the ISS on the roof and have the console on the first floor of the two-story building.

I was wrong, it worked fine. Now, this is for Davis and I don't know how the Atlas RF performance compares.

I assume that this metal building of yours has windows? There might be enough signal refracting around the roof and/or reflecting off of nearby objects.

Thanks for the real examples. The building is an airplane hangar that has 4 4X8 fiberglass panels on its southern side to let some light in. Otherwise it is all galvanized steel. One option would be to cut a hole and mount a plastic enclosure so the Access could sit in the enclosure outside of the steel walls.

The fiberglas panels give you a good shot at success, I think.

John Z - I will give it a try and find out. The fiberglass panels are not at all in line with the proposed mounting for the Atlas. Will that mater?
Thanks

Beech33,

A line of sight path from Atlas to Access would be ideal, but not essential. The signal waves reflect off of things, and bend around the edges of objects ( diffraction). What's most important is that there is a path into the building. If that exists, it's likely that at least some signal will find a way in, even if it means bouncing back off of adjacent buildings, or trees, or diffracting around a corner. Good luck and post back on this!

The Atlas is a good wx station. You made a good choice. Very accurate.

Acurite Wi-Fi Connection

Hi. I just bought an Acurite Pro 5 in 1 and have it installed. I'm now asking the most common question there is: I have read the instructions on how to hook up with WU from the Weather Display instruction manual. My problem is that my unit won't hook up with my wifi so I can't report anything. I have my station ID and password but that's as far as I can go. Number 3 on the instructions say: "Connect to the Wi-Fi signal (named AcuRite 06068M ) of the Acurite display from your computer or mobile device.

What "Wi-Fi signal? The wifi indicator on the display is flashing so it's not hooking up to my router and modem. How do I fix this?

Would having the Acurite Access device put me online and could I get to WU that way as well as My Acurite?

I would spend the money for the access unit, but only if it's going to work after I plug it into my router with the ethernet cable.

Hope this isn't too confusing. Thanks.

Reinforcing DoctorKnow,
I also think highly of Atlas.
Glad to hear your hangar installation went well!

Thanks again. I bought 2 of the Atlas/Access units- next install is to replace my old 5-in-1/Hub at a beach house. That will be a good test with the windy and salty conditions.

Your display is currently working as a WiFi access point for itself and is emitting the network name "AcuRite 06068M".  That is to allow you to attach to the network name "AcuRite 06068M" with your smart phone or tablet.  Once that connection is established, you then set up the display through your smartphone or tablet so that it will have the necessary information to connect to your existing home WiFi network.

Once the setup is complete, the display will take down the "AcuRite 06068M" network, reset itself, and then attach to your existing home WiFi network.  Assuming the information you gave it is correct, all should be fine.  If not, you'll have to start over.

If you have an Access, you just connect an ethernet cable and everthing configures itself over the wire.

That will make wunderground work.  However, that model does not communicate to myAcurite.  I'm not sure why they built it that way... probably just to keep costs down since it doesn't require that they maintain a data center.

If you had an Access instead, you would get both wundergound and myAcurite.  Setting up the display connection wouldn't even be necessary except to get the Dark Sky forecasts from the internet (assuming your model has that feature).

HI. Thanks for the info. Am I misunderstanding something? I just went into the Wi-Fi settings on my smartphone and tried to add the network "AcuRite 06086". It doesn't pick up the signal from the display that you said it would be emitting. Thanks...

I imagine the WiFi setup may have timed out.  Further down in the instructions it says:

*Wi-Fi setup page is available for 30 minutes after the display is powered on.
After 30 minutes, press and release the "gear" button to re-activate the setup
page.

Beech,
I looked at your station today. It seems you forgot to open the rain bucket and pull out the stabilizer, so as a result, you are not getting any action on the rain tipper.

How do you find what Access firmware number you have?

I did not remove the shipping pad
It will be next Saturday before I can get back on the hangar roof.

How do you find what Access firmware number you have?
The firmware version is on the Access Splash page. You need to know the IP address of your Access on your home network. Then using a browser, you just use that IP address which will bring up the Access’s splash page. My current firmware version is 047.

Example:

Hi. I'm getting there. I did get the display on the WiFi but, of course, I can't be on my home wifi and the display simultaneously. I think I'll just get the AcuRite Access and get it over with. That way I can also be part of My Accurite as well as WU. I see my router has two more available Ethernet ports so no problem there.

Here in Canada, it's a better deal at Amazon than to buy from Acurite in US currency. The price is lower than Amazon but add the currency exchange of 25% plus higher shipping costs, that makes Amazon a better deal here in Canada.

Thanks for your help. Anything you could add about being on two wifi networks at the same time would be appreciated.

Thanks worachj.

Now I have another question.  On the Access Splash page, how can you tell which sensor is which?  In the bottom of the screen (the sensor section), it lists eight sensors (seven towers and 5n1), but I only have six temp sensors and my 5 and 1.

As I was checking sensor signal strength on the Splash Page, all of my sensors disconnected from MyAcurite app, but the signal strength for all my sensors on the Splash Page show level 4.

NOTE:  Actually I lose MyAcurite/sensor connections every day on a regular basis.  I have moved my Access unit to at least 20 different locations (away from all electronics) and no change.  Also, I have not lost connection with Wunderground for quite some time.  I sure hope a firmware update or an improved Access happens soon.

One more concern, if there is some sort of 433MHZ interference causing problems with Access connectivity, why didn't I ever lose connection with SmartHub (maybe it wasn't 433MHZ)??

By the way, I love this forum.  It is one of the most informative forums I have ever been associated with!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One more comment, I do not have Atlas, I'm still with the 5n1, so I'm sorry if I have posted all this in the wrong place.

The splash page is a diagnostic tool.  It isn't meant to particularly identify sensors.  However, it sounds like you are picking up a sensor from a neighbor.

It sounds like your Access is "hearing" the sensors just fine.  There is no evidence of radio interference issue.  The problem is on the myAcurite server side.
