Re: SmartHub Abandonment: What Work-Arounds Are There?

I ran the 32 bit version. Said no PAE Kernel and would not boot. I tried to turn on PAE in windows, made no difference. I cannot turn on PAE in virtualbox because it does not load either. The PC is an IBM Thinkpad.

The best way to go now is Raspberry Pi. Maybe I will have better luck...

That's great! The old Thinkpads were wonderful machines. They deserve to be kept productive as long as possible! Good luck, DoctorKnow.

Funny story - I had a 2000 or 2001 vintage ThinkPad open on my bench yesterday, to swap out the CMOS battery for a relative who still uses the thing for word processing.....

Re: Acurite Atlas Elite

I'm going to have to go with "WOW" at this point. I have been a loyal AcuRite customer over 5 years, and have 2 PWS's in different parts of the country, endured the forced transition from SmartHub to Access in the hope that I would be able to use the Elite®. So now:
1) AcuRite is shutting down the forum because...........too much time commitment to answer the questions that are posted........too expensive......too many complaints about various issues.....what?
2) I wanted the Elite specifically to replace my 5-N-1's because I needed the promised longer wireless range and faster wind gust speed updates. But AcuRite isn't going to commit publicly to an approximate release date because......there are technical issues that are unresolved?.......other competitors miss their release dates also.........because it's none of my @#&% business....? Great responses.
3) The new sensors apparently require a different Display as they are not backwards compatible with the older ones. Familiar story. Same transmission frequency, at least in the Atlas (433 MHz) so I'm guessing some data protocol was changed. With all of the added costs involved I wonder if sales projections are the reason for shelving/delaying the Elite.... Or the user reviews of the Atlas (check Amazon) from, you know, lay people like myself, not the beta testers who get free product to review.
I was just hoping after the SmartHub PR debacle, that AcuRite would step up its game on the customer relations front. Still waiting...

I bought an atlas recently. When I plugged my display in initially it might come up white, or pink, or black, or with stripes, or flickering.  Let it sit plugged in for about 30 minutes - cycle power and then it works OK.  Seemed to be a thermal thing - it needs to be warmed up.  I submitted a warranty claim and got it replaced.  The new display works fine.

OK, so here's the conclusion of this story. The warranty with MasterCard went great. Only took 10 days till I got a check, and that was after a 3 day delay in getting the copy of the receipt from Sam's Club to submit for the claim. They didn't even look at the receipt or they wold have noticed that the purchase price I told them when submitting the claim of $95 was a total that included several other items. I was going on the statement charge at Sam's club for purchase before I had the receipt, and was unaware that my wife who picked it up had bought other things! So I ended up with a check for $95! [tup]

So the last part of the story is that I got the 06006M display for $85 off Amazon and after hooking it up I decided to play around with the old HD display and did a factory reset. To my surprise and amazement that fixed the original problem
So after 5 days it is still working perfect. All the historical data is retained and I'm back to a working display.\:D/

Thanks for sharing that. I can't tell you how many times, through the years, I've fixed something that I thought was unfixable, with a hard reset.

Usually the Davis is more in line with the other ones around, but it varies.  Sometimes the direct sun on the radiation shield makes it warmer though.

Overall for me it was worth it to upgrade, because of the 2.5 second updates and being able to use rapid fire on Weather Underground using WeeWx.  Also the Acurite console would often return bad data and I had to resort to using an SDR and different sensor to get pressure.  Haven't had any bad data issues with Davis, at least not yet.  From what I've read Acurite refuses to give any technical specs out so the WeeWx developers had to reverse engineer to get it to work.  Not so with Davis and because of that there is better support.

My plan is to eventually upgrade to a VP2, but that will be down the line.

I'm also thinking of modding the Davis to add a fan aspirated radiation shield maybe when all this snow melts.
With a Vue, that'll be next to impossible without completely changing the physical structure of the ISS. The VP2 however, is easily modded.

I found in the Winter months, the single solar panel aspirator worked better than the dual. I think the sun angle is worse and doesn't fire the fan up to full power.

Victoria,

Can you tell us what we should do in regards to the smarthub? Disconnect it before the last day, or just leave it hooked up? Will it be bricked? I am having to use it to get data to several sites.

Thanks.

I don't have a direct comparison but the two stations closest to me (less than .5 miles) are both Vantage Pro 2s and during the middle of the day, even if it's overcast, they have been reading 2 or 3 degrees below my 5 in 1. At night we match up pretty well. It could be that the 5 in 1's solar panel is covered in snow right now.

@Victoria

Well, isn't that just great.

Since it seems to be a "handful" of people, and not a widespread issue, isn't it possible that a few devices themselves are defective, in which a replacement would be in order? If this hasn't yet been solved in almost a year, are we just supposed to "live with it" and "hope" that a solution can be found at some time? And if a solution ISN'T found, oh well that's too bad?

I don't blame you at all for being frustrated, and I'm sorry we've put you in that position. We do take this issue seriously, but have found that trying replacements did not resolve the it. I won't go into the full process of everything we've done throughout our investigation, but I can assure you we're working on it. If you want to discuss this further, please don't hesitate to send me a PM. I can't pull a root cause out of the ether, but I can better understand your particular situation and the severity of it.

The smartHUB will more or less stop working all together once it can no longer connect to My AcuRite. There's no harm in using it until it stops, so that's up to you.

Victoria,
Any thoughts on increasing the number of sensors that the Access can handle from 7 to 10 ... like the SmartHub?

Good! Glad others are on top of this as well. If someone else figures out the handshake first, fantastic! If I get a solution working, I'll post it.

The necessary responses aren't difficult.  In the early days (when it was just the bridge), any acknowledgement would do.

For the SmartHUB, you also need to occasionally send the time with the response.  Otherwise the SmartHUB will have no idea when to reset the rain totals.

You should be able to find a few threads describing the protocol on this forum, or you could look at the code for other programs such as Acuparse and weewx.

I understand the coding thing. I worked in C++ (in the Dos Days) and managed to stay up-to-date through Visual Basic 6. I gave it up and focused on hardware and networking services for the last 16 years running my own business. I would definitely support your efforts Ryan. Kevin Key is a great guy and hardcore brilliant coder that is worth visiting with. The fact that George(nincehelser) chimed in is an honor as far as I am concerned. George has vast experience in all things weather and has advanced knowledge of implementation on several platforms. He also has the very rare gift of common sense.

Look forward to your progress, Ryan!

For the sake of all those who have no idea how to code or play with Linux I hope this is simple to add.
